Senate Report: Incredible Amount of Media Leaks Hurting National Security

A report released by the Senate on Thursday revealed that the Donald Trump administration has had to deal with one media leak per day since assuming office.
According to the report, the current American leadership is faced with an "alarming" and "unprecedented" amount of media leaks that pose very serious danger to national security and safety. Republicans have since called on law enforcement officials to improve on how they investigate leaks that threaten to reveal potentially sensitive information.
The 24-page report was put together by the Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Ron Johnson, R-Wis., along with the committee’s majority staff. It is titled “State Secrets: How an Avalanche of Media Leaks is Harming National Security.”
The executive summary of the report reads “To ensure the security of our country’s most sensitive information, federal law enforcement officials ought to thoroughly investigate leaks of potentially sensitive information flowing at an alarming rate.”
The authors put into consideration media leaks right from Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20 to May 25, his 126th day in office.
“Articles published by a range of national news organizations between January 20 and May 25, 2017 included at least 125 stories with leaked information potentially damaging to national security,” the summary said, noting that the leaks are “potential violations of federal law, punishable by jail time.”
A shocking piece of stat revealed by the report is that the media leaks were about “seven times faster” under the Trump administration than during the first 126 days of both Barack Obama and George W. Bush’s tenure.
“It is also apparent that the arguments often used to justify leaks are at odds with the Trump administration-that leakers are bringing to light potential illegality, unwise policies, or concerns about the President’s temperament-have no legal basis,” the report disclosed.
According to the report, 78 of the leaks are related to the Russian election interference saga.
