LA Gets Sued by the DOJ for Obstructing Immigration Enforcement

On Monday, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles, alleging that the city's unlawful sanctuary policies hinder immigration enforcement and have contributed to previous riots. The city's actions were described by Attorney General Pam Bondi as "the driving cause" of the mayhem.
According to the DOJ lawsuit, sanctuary city regulations in Los Angeles allow illegal aliens to avoid deportation and are a flagrant violation of federal law. Los Angeles' reluctance to assist immigration authorities is attributed in the lawsuit to recent "rioting, looting, and vandalism" that compelled the National Guard and U.S. Marines to be sent.
The city's practices "contributed to a lawless and unsafe environment," according to U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, who also noted that the Constitution "prohibits the City from picking and choosing which federal laws will be enforced."
The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court, names the City of Los Angeles, the Los Angeles City Council, and Mayor Karen Bass as defendants. It claims that the city's practices illegally protect illegal aliens at the expense of public safety and violate the Supremacy Clause of the US Constitution.
Attorney General Pam Bondi stated, "The violence, chaos, and attacks on law enforcement that Americans witnessed in Los Angeles recently were primarily caused by sanctuary policies." "Under President Trump, jurisdictions like Los Angeles are undermining law enforcement at every level by disregarding federal law by giving preference to illegal aliens over citizens of the United States."
According to the DOJ, sanctuary legislation in Los Angeles have prevented law enforcement and local officials from collaborating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), thereby permitting criminal aliens to stay in the country unlawfully. The lawsuit also claims that the rampant lawlessness that lately engulfed the city was a direct result of this failure to cooperate with federal officials.
The DOJ's complaint claims that the federal government had to take extraordinary measures to restore order due to the severity of the unrest, sending both the US Marines and the California National Guard.
U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli for the Central District of California stated, "Today's lawsuit holds the City of Los Angeles accountable for purposefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration law." "The City's illegal and discriminatory ordinance has contributed to a lawless and unsafe environment that this lawsuit will help end by aiding removable aliens in avoiding federal law enforcement."
On her first day in office, Bondi directed DOJ’s Civil Division to examine and challenge state and municipal legislation that “facilitate violations of federal immigration laws or impede lawful federal immigration operations.” This was part of her top goal to attack sanctuary city policies.
This case is a component of a larger effort by the DOJ, coordinated by Bondi, to demolish sanctuary jurisdictions around the country. Similar lawsuits were brought against New York and New Jersey policies earlier this year.
Federal officials now charge Los Angeles leaders with weakening national law enforcement and putting American citizens in peril, despite their public defense of their sanctuary policy as safeguarding immigrant neighborhoods.
The lawsuit aims to overturn the regulations and compel the city to fully abide by federal immigration rules by requesting declaratory and injunctive relief.
