Will North Carolina Finally Get MAGA Representation with Lara Trump’s Bid to Replace Thom Tillis?

According to people close to the Trump family, Lara Trump is "strongly considering" running for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina. Her prospective run comes after Sen. Thom Tillis declared he would not run for reelection due to his opposition to President Trump's flagship legislation package.
According to two sources who spoke to NOTUS and NBC News, respectively, Lara Trump is considering running for the Senate "seriously," with one characterizing the odds as "high." Tillis announced his resignation on Sunday. He and President Trump recently argued over the "Big Beautiful Bill." Former RNC co-chair Lara Trump, 42, is a native of Wilmington and was in charge of convention organizing and fundraising.
Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) declared on Sunday that he would not run for reelection in 2026, which has increased the likelihood that Lara Trump will enter the U.S. Senate. Following a high-profile dispute with President Donald Trump over the "Big Beautiful Bill," the decision has created a path for a new generation of Republican candidates, of whom Lara Trump may be one of the most well-known.
Lara is "seriously considering" running for the office, according to sources who spoke to NOTUS, while another source close to the Trump family told NBC News that there is a "high likelihood" that she will do so. Following his successful attempt to remove the previous RNC leadership last year, President Trump appointed Lara as co-chair of the Republican National Committee. The announcement comes as he continues to overhaul the Republican Party. As part of her job, she oversaw the party's convention preparation and fundraising activities in Milwaukee.
During the 2024 Women for Trump Hurricane Helene relief tour, a reporter asked Lara Trump about a future North Carolina run for office, and she replied, “Never say never, as Silk of Diamond and Silk beamed in the background at the thought.”
Lara's national visibility has been further enhanced since the election by hosting a weekend show on Fox News, “My View with Lara Trump.” Polls for the North Carolina Senate contest have already included her name. She had 65 percent of the probable Republican primary voters' support, compared to Thom Tillis's 11 percent, according to a Victory Insights poll taken last summer.
Lara would not be the only Republican thinking about running for office. According to reports, incumbent RNC Chair Michael Whatley and National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Rep. Richard Hudson are also in the running.
Lara would be the second Trump family member elected to public office if she ran and won. In a state that President Trump has won three straight times but that is still politically competitive, her candidacy would immediately garner national attention and bolster his influence.
As Lara considers whether to reinstate the Trump name on the North Carolina ballot, conjecture is now growing.
