The 2026 midterm elections delivered a stunning political earthquake in North Carolina. In a night of tight races and massive upsets, Democrats unofficially flipped six U.S. House seats, sending a resounding message to Washington and fundamentally shifting the state's congressional delegation.
Despite recent Republican dominance in statewide races—and newly redrawn congressional maps designed to favor GOP candidates—Democratic challengers surged to victory, ultimately claiming 10 of the state’s 14 U.S. House seats.
Here is a closer look at how this historic election unfolded and what it means for the political landscape.
The Biggest Upsets and Flipped Seats
The most shocking result of the night came out of the 9th Congressional District, where retired Army Maj. Richard Ojeda defeated seven-term incumbent Rep. Richard Hudson. This wasn't just any seat—Hudson was serving as the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), making his defeat a massive symbolic and strategic blow to the party. Furthermore, Republicans had held a grip on this district in every election since 1962.
Ojeda wasn't the only Democrat to unseat a Republican incumbent or capture a GOP-held district. The other five flipped seats include:
5th District: Chuck Hubbard narrowly defeated incumbent Rep. Virginia Foxx.
6th District: Cyril Jefferson ousted incumbent Rep. Addison McDowell.
11th District: Jamie Ager claimed victory over Republican state Rep. Jennifer Balkcom.
13th District: Paul Barringer unseated incumbent Rep. Brad Knott.
14th District: Lakesha Womack defeated incumbent Rep. Tim Moore.
Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Don Davis successfully defended his toss-up seat in the 1st Congressional District against retired Army Col. Laurie Buckhout, overcoming a district that was specifically redrawn by Raleigh lawmakers in an attempt to secure a Republican victory.

A Statewide Blue Wave
The congressional flips were part of a broader statewide trend that defied recent history. Before Election Day, Republicans boasted a 32-10 record against Democrats in statewide races this decade. However, the 2026 election told a very different story.
Republicans went 0-for-5 in major statewide contests, losing a U.S. Senate seat, a seat on the state Supreme Court, and all three available seats on the North Carolina Court of Appeals.

Razor-Thin Margins and Potential Recounts
While the Democratic victories were sweeping, many of the races were decided by incredibly slim margins. North Carolina state law permits a recount for U.S. House races if the difference between the candidates is 1% or less.
Because of these razor-thin margins, many races were too close to officially call late into the night. For example, in the 3rd District, Republican Rep. Dr. Greg Murphy survived a nail-biter against Democrat Dr. Raymond Smith. Several of the flipped districts also fell within this 1% threshold, meaning the state could see multiple recounts before the results are finalized. What’s Next?
North Carolina's 2026 election results serve as a powerful reminder of how rapidly the political tides can turn. A delegation that Republicans hoped to expand to a 10-4 majority has instead flipped to a 10-4 Democratic advantage.
As the state awaits potential recounts and the final certification of votes, one thing is clear: North Carolina remains one of the most competitive and unpredictable political battlegrounds in the nation.
