Finally, a Bill to Remove Illegal Aliens from Census Counts Used for Congressional Seats and the Electoral College

A group of Republicans, led by Sen. Bill Hagerty, wants to stop Democrat-run states from getting more political power by counting illegal aliens in the census. The Equal Representation Act would make sure that only citizens of the United States are counted for Electoral College votes and congressional places.

The bill would change the way the census is done so that foreigners, like people with green cards, visas, or who are in the country illegally, are not counted when the Electoral College and Congress decide who gets to represent a state. Hagerty said that the current system "dilutes the power of other Americans' votes" and said that Democrats are using illegal immigrants to stay in power.

Seventeen Republican senators are also in favor of the bill. Some of the Republican senators in favor of the bill include Sens. Katie Britt, Ted Budd, Tim Sheehy, and Tommy Tuberville. Budd said that the bill was needed to stop Democrats from "taking power away from American people."

The Equal Representation Act, which was proposed by Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN), would make sure that only American citizens are counted when deciding who gets to represent us in Congress and the Electoral College. The law as it stands now counts all people, even those who are not citizens, when figuring out how many congressional seats and electoral votes each state gets.

“It is unacceptable that illegal aliens and non-citizens are accounted for when dividing up congressional districts and making our presidential election map,” Hagerty told Breitbart News. "People are still leaving cities that are run by Democrats, but Democrats are desperate not to lose their seats in Congress or their electoral votes, so they have filled the void with illegal immigrants." The bill also calls for a citizenship question to be added to the every-ten-years census, which Democrats have long resisted.

A co-sponsor of the bill, Sen. Ted Budd (R-NC), said that left-wing towns had been using illegal aliens to gain political power for years: “For years, Democrat-run sanctuary cities and states have used millions of illegal aliens to grow their political influence...” Illegal immigrants should not be able to decide which congressional seats or Electoral College votes a state gets.

The GOP's worries are backed up by research from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS). CIS found that including non-citizens changes the way things are represented, especially in areas with many illegal immigrants. Based on what they found, Republicans only won four of the 24 districts in 2022 where at least 20% of people were not citizens. In contrast, Democrats hold only five of the 54 districts where less than 2% of the population are non-citizens. Steve Daines (R-MT) said, "The law is clear: illegal immigrants are not citizens of the United States and should not be counted as such." He said the bill was a "commonsense measure" that would stop sanctuary cities from using false population counts to change the results of elections or steal money from taxpayers.

The errors are real, not just ideas. Researchers from CIS found that the share of the two-party vote going to Democrats went up by 1.8 percentage points for every percentage point rise in the number of non-citizens living in an area.

"Americans should decide American elections," Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) put it simply. If states like California and New York count non-citizens in the Census, they shouldn't be able to get more votes in the Electoral College and in Congress.

Even though Republicans backed the bill, Democrats have been firmly against it. Last year, House Democrats voted unanimously to stop a similar version of the bill. They chose to keep counting votes from illegal immigrants and other non-citizens in the Electoral College and for Congress.
