President Trump to Push No-Cash-Bail Nationwide in Efforts to Restore Law and Order

President Trump called no-cash-bail arrangements a "disaster" that encourages crime and promised Monday to push congressional legislation outlawing them nationally. The bill's author, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), promised to repeal New York's bail reform legislation and reinstate "law and order that puts America first."

During a White House press conference, Trump attacked no-cash-bail practices in New York, Chicago, and other Democratic-led cities. He also proclaimed temporary federal authority of the police force in Washington, D.C. He remarked, "Someone kills someone and they're released without posting any money bail before the day is over."

Stefanik called Gov. Kathy Hochul's bail reform a "radical, dangerous, and insane" policy that prioritizes "criminals and illegals" above law-abiding individuals, and she told the New York Post that she would spearhead the legislative effort to repeal it.

While supporting Trump's plan, DC U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro criticized the city's Youth Rehabilitation Act after a 19-year-old convicted of a bus shooting was given probation rather than jail time.

In an effort to reverse Democrat-led criminal justice changes that he claims have caused turmoil in American cities, President Donald Trump announced Monday that he will push Congress to enact a statewide ban on no-cash-bail laws.

Speaking from the White House, Trump stated that states like New York, which abolished bail for the majority of non-violent crimes in 2019, such as simple assault and burglary, would be the focus of his proposal. Albany lawmakers were forced to partially reverse the strategy after a series of high-profile incidents involving criminals being swiftly arrested for new offenses were triggered by the shift.

According to Trump, "anywhere in the nation where cash bail is not available is a disaster." They don't alter the fact that it was the initial cause of the issue in New York. They have no desire to alter it. That's how it began in Chicago. "Someone murders someone and they're released on no cash bail before the day is out," he continued.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) promised the New York Post that she would draft the legislation to implement Trump's agenda within hours. "To save New York and save America, I will be spearheading legislation to permanently end Kathy Hochul and New York's failed bail reform," Stefanik declared. "The radical, dangerous, and insane policies that prioritize criminals and illegals must end immediately."

Trump recognized the challenge in Congress, where the proposal could be stalled by the Senate's 60-vote barrier and narrow Republican majorities. "We'll rely on the Senate and Congress Republicans to cast ballots. We will vote because we have the majority.” He responded, "We have everything, including the great Big Beautiful Bill, but we don't have a big majority."

DC U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro supported Trump's position, stating that the issue goes beyond bail reform. She cited the Youth Rehabilitation Act of the District, which gives courts the authority to revoke sentences for criminals under the age of 25. Pirro brought up the example of 19-year-old Javarry Peaks, who was found guilty of shooting a fellow bus passenger in the chest on camera but received a probationary term.

Pirro declared, "I convict someone of shooting another person in the chest with an illegal gun on a public bus with intent to kill." "You know what happens when I convict him? The judge tells him to go to college and grants him probation. We must target the DC Council and their ridiculous legislation.”

Trump's pledge, together with his national no-cash-bail proposal, Monday's proclamation of "Liberation Day" in D.C., and the National Guard's deployment to reestablish public safety in the capital, represent yet another step in his effort to regain federal control over crime policy.
