President Trump Announces Liberation Day in DC: “We’re Taking Our Capital Back!”

Declaring Monday to be "Liberation Day" in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump said he would take over the Metropolitan Police Department and use the National Guard to fight the city's rising crime rate.
During a crowded press conference at the White House, Trump said that he was bringing the city's police force under federal control by using Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. He pledged that "very good people" who are "tough" and "know what's happening" will spearhead the move.
Trump promised that the National Guard will be permitted to "do their job properly" and stated that they would be called upon to "help reestablish law and order" in the capital.
According to data presented by the president, car thefts have doubled and carjackings have tripled in the past five years, while killings in 2023 are at their highest level in decades. He contrasted the murder rate of Bogotá, Mexico City, and other areas beset by violence with that of D.C.
Declaring Monday morning to be "Liberation Day" for the city and taking direct control of its law enforcement, President Donald Trump made a strong statement aimed at addressing what he described as the "out-of-control" crime issue in Washington, D.C.
Trump announced from the White House briefing room that he is formally using Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to take the Metropolitan Police Department's municipal control and transfer it to the federal government. Trump told reporters, "We're going to retake our capital on this Liberation Day in D.C. You'll be meeting the individuals who will be directly involved with that as I formally place the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal supervision under the authority granted to me as President of the United States. They are wonderful individuals, yet they are tough and aware of the situation. They have already done it.”
Additionally, Trump declared that the National Guard will be sent in right away to help restore order. He declared, "They will be permitted to carry out their duties effectively and will contribute to the restoration of law and public safety in Washington, D.C."
The president presented the action as a public safety measure rather than a political one. He said to the press corps, "I know that many of you lean liberal, but you don't want to be shot, killed, raped, and mugged." "You want to feel safe leaving your house or apartment, but you don't have that right now."
Trump presented a clear image of the city's crime issue, pointing out that Washington has a higher murder rate than Bogotá, Colombia, and Mexico City. Over the last five years, there has been a more than threefold increase in carjackings and a twofold increase in auto thefts. He claimed that 2023 saw the highest murder rate ever recorded. "Violent gangs, bloodthirsty criminals, homeless people, drugged-out maniacs, and wandering mobs of wild youth have taken over our capital city, and we will not allow it to continue."
"We're not going to take it, just like we did on our southern border," Trump said, drawing a comparison between his strategy and his border enforcement tactics.
The humorous incident coincided with Trump's continuous attempts to update and redesign the White House compound. Despite the fact that Tuesday's walk did not take place at the site of his planned $200 million ballroom, Trump took advantage of the opportunity to point to the area around him by circling his arms before yelling, "Everything I do is financed by me!"
Among the many ambitious improvements is the ballroom, which Trump intends to complete before he leaves office. Throughout his administration, the president has actively participated in White House renovations, regularly visiting the grounds and speaking with construction workers. In the past, he oversaw the erection of two 100-foot flagpoles on the North and South Lawns, both of which flew enormous American flags that could be seen across the capital.
Under Trump's leadership, the Oval Office has also undergone renovations, including the addition of gold plating to the carpeting, fireplace, and ceiling. A concrete base was recently installed in the Rose Garden as part of a renovation, according to the White House, to keep high heels from sinking into the ground. This was done as a nod to the officials and guests who are usually present at outdoor events.
Trump's self-styled image as a president who practically transforms the institutions he oversees was further supported by Tuesday's rooftop walk, which was in line with his builder persona.
