A Full Year of Zero Border Releases: How the Southern Border Shifted From "Catch-and-Release" to Frontline Defense

By The Blog Source

For years under the Biden/Kamala administration, the American southern border was defined by images of overcrowded processing centers, overwhelmed agents, and a controversial Democrat party policy framework that critics labeled "catch-and-release." Today, however, official data signals a massive paradigm shift in how the United States manages its frontier.

According to recent announcements, the U.S. has reached a major milestone: 12 consecutive months of zero border releases for illegal aliens apprehended by the Border Patrol into the interior of the country.

This transition marks a dramatic reversal from the peak of the border crisis two years ago. Under the previous Biden administration, tens of thousands of apprehended individuals were released into the U.S. interior monthly due to strained capacity. President Trump’s administration has pointed to these new metrics as definitive proof that the era of catch-and-release has officially ended, fundamentally transforming immigration enforcement into a front-line defensive operation rather than an administrative processing machine.

The implications of this shift extend beyond immigration statistics. With Border Patrol agents freed from the administrative burden of supervising and processing massive waves of illegal aliens, personnel have been redeployed to frontline enforcement. The immediate byproduct of this operational pivot has been a dramatic surge in narcotics interdictions, preventing thousands of pounds of lethal drugs from reaching American communities. This compelling data underscores an undeniable reality: the southern border is operating under an entirely different enforcement playbook.

Key Findings from the DHS Report

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released a comprehensive snapshot of enforcement metrics for April 2026. The key findings include:

1. Collapse in Border Crossings

  • 94% Drop in Apprehensions: Border Patrol apprehensions along the southwest border totaled 8,943 in April, a 94% decline compared to the monthly average of the previous administration.

  • 96% Below the Peak: April's numbers represent a 96% drop from the record peak observed in December 2023.

  • Historic Lows: Total apprehensions for the current fiscal year through April are 37% lower than the 30-year monthly average spanning from FY 1992 through FY 2024.

2. Dramatic Drop in Daily Averages

  • Fewer Crossings Per Day Than Per Hour: Border Patrol averaged 298 apprehensions per day in April. To put these numbers in perspective, during the height of the crisis in December 2023, agents encountered roughly 336 individuals per hour.

3. Surge in Drug Interdictions

  • 61% Increase in Seizures: CBP has seized 61% more dangerous drugs (including cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana) this fiscal year through April compared to the same period in FY 2024.

  • Spike in Hard Narcotics: In April 2026 alone, heroin seizures jumped 73% and methamphetamine seizures rose 63% compared to March 2026. Agents also intercepted 463 pounds of fentanyl during the month.

4. Trade, Tariff, and Economic Enforcement

  • Commercial Volume: CBP processed $312 billion in imports in April, identifying $21.6 billion in duties for collection.

  • Combating Counterfeits and Forced Labor: Officials intercepted 263 shipments (valued over $810 million) for potential forced labor violations and seized nearly 3 million counterfeit items worth an estimated $1.5 billion.
