President Trump Forms the Memphis Safe Task Force to Tackle Rising Violent Crime Rates

After implementing the same strategy to clean up Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump issued a document on Monday establishing the "Memphis Safe Task Force," announcing Memphis as the next place he will "make safe again."
In addition to top Cabinet officials, Tennessee senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty, and members from the Department of the Treasury and the Drug Enforcement Administration, the task group was formed at the request of Governor Bill Lee (R-TN).
Memphis has the greatest rate of violent crime, the third-highest murder rate, and the highest incidence of property crime in the country, according to Trump, who cited the city's 2024 figures as "alarming." He cautioned, "Today, the likelihood of a murder in Memphis, Tennessee, is four times higher than in Mexico City."
According to the president, the operation will be similar to the crackdown in Washington, D.C., and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will work with Governor Lee to send Tennessee National Guard members, as well as possibly other Guard forces from other states.
On Monday, President Donald Trump signed a memorandum creating the "Memphis Safe Task Force," formalizing his most recent anti-crime program. Trump said the action was required to address what he called "unacceptable levels of violence" in the city, standing with Republican senators Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty of Tennessee and Governor Bill Lee.
Trump said before signing the order, "It's very important because of the crime that's going on, not only in Memphis but in many cities, and we're going to take care of all of them step by step, just like we did in DC." "We have virtually no crime in DC right now, and we're going to keep it that way," he said, reminding reporters that violent crime has drastically decreased in the nation's capital following his administration's involvement.
Trump brought up Memphis' alarming 2024 crime statistics, which included 12,522 violent assaults, 5,616 burglaries, 429 rapes, and 249 killings. "Carjackings, robberies, shootings, and killings have been rampant," Trump said. He underlined that the task force will use lessons learned from the D.C. crackdown to confront the larger trend of lawlessness in addition to violent crime.
A White House information sheet states that the task force will include experts and staff from several federal agencies, such as the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Department of Justice, and the Treasury. Trump gave Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth instructions to cooperate with Governor Lee to activate Tennessee National Guard units and, if needed, with other state governors to send reinforcements.
Trump demonstrated his administration's resolve to make Memphis safer by adopting a tough stance and consolidating federal, state, and local resources. He said, "We're going to take care of Memphis," casting the initiative as another illustration of his administration's larger goal of reestablishing law and order in the most criminally active cities in the country.
