Federal Judge Stops California’s Attempt to Unmask ICE Agents

The Trump administration won a resounding victory in court Monday when a federal judge banned California from implementing a new law that would have prohibited federal immigration officials from hiding their faces while conducting enforcement operations. The ruling also put an end to a Democratic-led effort to control ICE and the Border Patrol.

The U.S. declared the mask prohibition ineffective. District Judge Christina Snyder ruled that the policy illegally discriminated against federal officers by singling them out while excluding state and local law enforcement. The Trump administration's lawsuit delayed the law's implementation earlier this year. Governor Gavin Newsom signed it last fall, following a summer of high-profile ICE operations in Los Angeles.

Amid an increase in harassment and threats associated with immigration enforcement, federal officials contended that the proposal would deprive officers of fundamental safety safeguards. Snyder concurred, supporting Washington's claim that California is powerless to impose selective restrictions on the performance of federal officers' duties.

In her celebration of the decision, Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the Justice Department's lawyers for thwarting what she described as a political and harmful measure. "These federal agents routinely face harassment, doxxing, obstruction, and attacks simply for performing their duties," Bondi continued. "That is not acceptable to us." She also pledged to "always have the backs of our great federal law enforcement officers" and stated that the government will continue "fighting and winning in court for President Trump's law-and-order agenda."

The judge upheld a separate rule that cops, including federal agents, wear clear identification that displays their agency and badge number while on duty but barred the mask ban itself, which would have outlawed masks, neck gaiters, and other facial coverings. By stating that California could pursue a mask ban if it applied equally to all law enforcement agencies, Snyder also gave Democrats a limited avenue to try again.

The injunction has put California's attempt to control the actions of federal officials on hold, at least temporarily.
