After saving 165 people from Texas floods on his very first mission, U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan is being hailed as a national hero. Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, described Ruskan's acts as "astonishing" and a compelling illustration of unselfish bravery.

In a single mission in flood-ravaged Texas, Ruskan, a recently deployed Coast Guard rescue swimmer, rescued an astounding 165 lives. Scott Ruskan is an American hero, said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem on Saturday. His unselfish bravery epitomizes the values and goals of the @USCG. After heavy rains led the Guadalupe River to rise more than 26 feet in a matter of hours, the flooding occurred Friday morning close to Kerrville.

Helicopters from the Texas National Guard saved seven females who were thought to be campers. Another spectacular rescue saw a DPS helicopter airlifting a woman from a tree. After sharing the video, Governor Greg Abbott declared, "We will not stop until everyone is accounted for."

Petty Officer Scott Ruskan of the U.S. Coast Guard accomplished his first rescue mission in central Texas, saving 165 people in a single operation that is garnering national notice. In a social media post on Saturday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem publicly acknowledged Ruskan's actions, referring to him as "an American hero" and pointing out that he was the sole triage coordinator present at the incident. "His career began with this rescue effort. She wrote, "His unselfish bravery exemplifies the spirit and mission of the @USCG."

Early on July 4, floodwaters overran a children's camp in Kerrville, prompting a desperate attempt to save lives. Children accounted for at least 15 of the verified deaths. Authorities were still looking for more than 20 females who vanished during the flood, which was caused by a giant storm that stalled over the Guadalupe River, as of late Saturday.

Reporting from the scene, Breitbart Texas vividly detailed the devastation, saying, "Within hours, a wall of water rose at least 26 feet above the riverbanks. Cars were flung like broken toys, houses were wiped from their foundations, and trees were flattened.” Among the spectacular rescues, seven little girls who were stuck close to Kerrville were safely evacuated by a Texas National Guard Blackhawk aircraft. As the helicopter landed, the females were seen on camera sprinting for their lives.

Another rescue involved a Texas DPS plane freeing a woman from tree branches as floodwaters surged underneath her. "Air rescue missions like this are being done around the clock," said Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who shared the video on social media. We won't give up until we find everyone.

Many Texans and Americans alike are finding inspiration in the deeds of servicemen like Petty Officer Ruskan as search and recovery efforts continue.
