Suspect Arrested by the FBI in the 2021 D.C. Pipe Bomb Investigation

A suspect who allegedly put pipe bombs outside the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters on the eve of January 6 was finally taken into custody by federal investigators on Thursday, following years of dead ends, public annoyance, and tough questioning from Congress. The arrest, which was first reported by CNN and the Associated Press and verified by law enforcement officials, comes just weeks before the five-year anniversary of the Capitol breach and represents much-needed progress in a case that had grown embarrassing for the FBI. Sources claim that Brian Cole Jr., a 30-year resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, is the suspect now in detention.

A law enforcement source informed the AP that they took the male suspect into custody Thursday morning, despite the pending accusations. An individual wearing a gray hoodie, mask, gloves, and Nike Air Max Speed Turf sneakers was seen carrying a backpack and placing what the FBI described as "viable explosive devices" outside both national party headquarters on the evening of January 5, 2021, according to the grainy surveillance footage that investigators had to work with for years. It wasn't until Congress convened the next day to certify the 2020 election results that those devices were discovered, having gone unreported for around 17 hours.

According to the timetable, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and then-Vice President-elect Kamala Harris were only a few feet away from the devices on Wednesday when their motorcades entered and exited the DNC's South Capitol Street headquarters. Federal authorities were criticized in a House Administration Committee inquiry earlier this year for permitting Pelosi's motorcade to drive right by one of the devices after it had already been detected, attributing the oversight to a larger inability to safeguard the area.

Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Barry Loudermilk of Georgia wrote the identical report, which criticized federal investigators for abandoning the case too soon. The congressmen said that by late February 2021, the FBI had already started to divert resources from the bombing investigation and obstructed legislative demands for updates, despite what they described as "a promising array of data" and "numerous persons of interest." In their assessment, they bemoaned the lack of "significant progress" and urged the agency to provide additional details. Investigators released further information hours later, including more CCTV footage and an estimated 5-foot-7 height of the suspect.

As the Biden-era Justice Department relentlessly pursued hundreds of Trump supporters connected to the Capitol breach without providing any clarity on who planted the explosives, the years-long lack of answers stoked widespread speculation, especially among conservatives, that the bomber might have been a politically awkward figure. After years of openly criticizing the investigation, now-FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino, who assumed office in March, had frequently asked whether the case was being slow-rolled. Prior to joining the bureau, he accused previous leadership of a "massive cover-up" and implied on his podcast that the operation had the characteristics of an "inside job."

After joining the FBI, Bongino prioritized the stalled inquiry above all else. According to a post he made last month, the bureau significantly expanded its workforce and information reward, hired more investigators, flew in outside officers to serve as task force partners, and reexamined previous work products. He wrote on X, "We significantly expanded our investigative resources and brought in new personnel to look at the case."

The Justice Department and FBI have not responded to the arrest. For now, the nation is one step closer to answers that ought to have arrived far sooner, almost five years after pipe bombs were surreptitiously planted outside the headquarters of both major political parties.
