Homeland Security Reveal Over 7,000 Convicted Illegal Aliens Being Shielded by New York Sanctuary City

Sanctuary New York City is once more under scrutiny following a senior Homeland Security official's disclosure that over 7,000 convicted illegal aliens are being protected from federal authorities within the city’s detention system. Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday, Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the city is presently detaining 7,169 criminal illegal aliens, many of whom she characterized as among the most dangerous offenders nationwide.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Todd Lyons sent a letter from ICE to Attorney General Letitia James of New York in September requesting her assistance in honoring ICE detainers on criminal illegal aliens. There was no response from her office.
According to McLaughlin, New York’s sanctuary laws constitute more than a political gesture; they pose a direct threat to public safety by preventing ICE from apprehending violent offenders and enabling many to re-enter major cities such as New York and Chicago. "These individuals residing unlawfully and involved in criminal activities are leaving detention facilities and returning to the streets of New York, Chicago, or other sanctuary cities to continue their unlawful conduct," she informed the network, cautioning that the city is effectively establishing a revolving door for offenders who should have been removed from the country entirely.
McLaughlin stated that New York’s jail population comprises "hundreds of murderers, hundreds of sexual predators, drug traffickers—the most dangerous individuals," yet city officials persist in obstructing ICE detainers, compelling federal agents to conduct operations in the streets rather than within secure facilities. The assistant secretary specifically highlighted Representative Dan Goldman, a Democratic congressman who has emerged as one of the most vocal advocates of sanctuary policies. McLaughlin contended that Goldman and his associates could significantly diminish the necessity for on-the-ground ICE operations through cooperation. They should consent to surrender those individuals, uphold the detainers, and consequently, there will be no need to inundate the area with our ICE law enforcement. We will not need to deploy those men and women on the ground, as we will remove these dangerous criminals from New York City’s institutions.

Goldman has instead sought to attribute responsibility to federal authorities, recently asserting that the anti-ICE protests in New York were incited by what he termed "reckless conduct" on the part of federal agents—a claim that DHS officials categorically deny. Homeland Security reported last week that assaults and violent incidents directed at ICE personnel have increased by over 1,150 percent, a significant indication of escalating hostility partly driven by anti-enforcement rhetoric from progressive legislators.
