HSS Secretary Kristi Noem Calls for Full Travel Ban on Every Country Sending Violent Offenders into the United States

One of the more aggressive border security demands of the Trump administration's second term was made on Monday by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who urged President Trump to impose a broad travel restriction on "every damn country" that allows violent criminals to enter the country. Shortly after meeting with the president, Noem made the recommendation public in a scathing post on X, stating that the country can no longer take in foreigners who are "flooding our nation with killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies."

Noem presented the plan as an essential departure from the Biden administration's unsuccessful leniency. She added a final line that was directly directed at the nations she claims are abusing American generosity: "WE DON'T WANT THEM." She wrote, "Our forefathers built this nation on blood, sweat, and the unwavering love of freedom — not for foreign invaders to slaughter our heroes, suck dry our hard-earned tax dollars, or snatch the benefits owed to AMERICANS." NOT ONE.

According to a DHS official who spoke to the New York Post, the list of nations subject to the new limitations will be released shortly. Although the specifics are still being worked out, the move is part of a larger shift in U.S. immigration policy in the wake of the attack on two members of the West Virginia National Guard in Washington, D.C., on Thanksgiving Eve last week. According to police, that attack was committed by an Afghan immigrant whose journey to the United States started during President Biden's hasty departure from Kabul in 2021.

The State Department stopped processing visas for Afghan passport holders in the immediate wake of the incident in an effort to stop more people from entering the country through the same routes that allowed the suspected gunman to enter. Lakanwal, a former member of an Afghan squad supported by the CIA, arrived in 2021 as part of Biden's Operation Allies Welcome, a mass-parole program that resettled tens of thousands of Afghans with little screening.

Noem, who has already been outspoken about vetting shortcomings during the Biden administration, stated last week that the case underscores the serious risks posed by politically motivated refugee operations and mass parole schemes. She said, "The suspect who shot our courageous National Guardsmen is an Afghan national who was one of the many unvetted, mass paroled into the United States under the Biden Administration's Operation Allies Welcome on September 8, 2021." “He should be starved of the glory he so desperately wants,” she continued, refusing to utter his name.

The proposal for a travel restriction represents yet another drastic departure from the laxity that characterized the immigration policies of the previous government. The White House is indicating that national security, not political correctness, will determine its next course of action, with Trump indicating a zero-tolerance stance and Noem advocating for sanctions against nations that permit dangerous people to enter the US in the first place.
