What makes this glitch particularly concerning is that the individuals applying for driver’s licenses or state IDs actually did the right thing. They correctly indicated on a keypad prompt that they were not U.S. citizens—yet the system automatically added them to the voter rolls anyway.
Since 2023, just under 400 of these individuals actually cast ballots in federal elections. These voters were spread across the state and registered across various affiliations, including Democrats, Republicans, and unaffiliated voters.

Governor Sherrill was quick to distance her administration from the root of the problem, pointing the finger at her predecessor, Phil Murphy. She noted that the error was only discovered within the past week and emphasized that the glitch did not sway the outcome of any elections.
“It’s unacceptable that no one in the previous administration brought this to light, demanded accountability, or took action when it happened years ago,” Sherrill stated. The DOJ Launches an Investigation
The admission caught the immediate attention of the U.S. Department of Justice. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, head of the Civil Rights Division, swiftly condemned the situation and announced a formal investigation.
“Today, NJ Gov. Sherrill stated that 400 non-citizens voted in elections. This is unacceptable and illegal!” Dhillon said in a statement, noting that ensuring the votes of U.S. citizens are not unlawfully diluted is of “paramount importance”.
