California Rep. Eric Swalwell said Monday that Democrats intend to use their next House majority to investigate not only Trump officials but also private citizens and firms linked to his administration, telling CNN that "accountability is coming."
Swalwell told CNN's Kate Bolduan that Democrats expect to reclaim the House majority next year and intend to "subpoena the Department of Justice, but also private actors" linked to Trump. He stated that the measure would provide "accountability" to entities that collaborated with the government.
Swalwell praised the recently indicted former FBI Director James Comey, characterizing the allegations as "politically motivated." He questioned that if Trump's DOJ believed Comey was lying, "Why didn't you indict him then?" His comments came after numerous high-profile legal settlements involving Trump, including a $10 billion payoff from CBS and $15 million from ABC over defamation and editing disputes related to coverage of the 2024 campaign.
Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell spoke on CNN's News Central on Monday, vowing that if Democrats reclaim control of the House, they will utilize subpoena power to target both public and private citizens associated with President Trump's administration.
Swalwell told co-host Kate Bolduan that Democrats are already planning for a new majority, and their goals extend beyond government oversight. "We have every intention to do that," he informed me. "We will bring oversight and accountability—we will subpoena the Department of Justice, but also private actors who have done these drug deals with the administration, college campuses, entertainment companies, and law firms—and so accountability is coming."
He kept going: "I hope that deters people from doing more of these deals, these one-offs with the president." Swalwell's portrayal of private firms and institutions as "actors" involved in wrongdoing represents a shift in tone, implying that Democrats may utilize congressional authority to compel Trump-aligned individuals and groups.
The statements come amid turmoil over the indictment of James Comey, the former FBI Director. Swalwell contended that the case was politically motivated, highlighting the fact that the alleged false statement happened during Trump's presidency. "If you're trying to tell me this is not politically motivated … why didn't you indict him then?" he asked, expressing confidence the case will be dismissed or end in an acquittal.
His words came as media outlets and legal firms that had clashed with Trump secured significant settlements. CBS recently agreed to a $10 billion settlement following Trump's lawsuit over the editing of an October 2024 interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, while ABC paid $15 million to resolve a defamation action over anchor George Stephanopoulos' statements about Republican Rep. Nancy Mace.
Swalwell made it plain that the next Democratic majority will not only investigate Trump but will also pursue everybody who supported him.
