Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, was fatally stabbed on a light rail train in Charlotte, and North Carolina Governor Josh Stein has come under fire for his plea for "more cops." Critics noted that Democratic-backed policies had resulted in the suspect's 14 arrests and numerous releases. Citing his budget intention to recruit more police officers, Stein wrote on X that he was "heartbroken" at Zarutska's murder and made the case that more policemen are necessary to stop such assaults.

Stein and former Democrat Governor Roy Cooper were charged by Republican lawmakers and authorities with encouraging crime through lenient sentencing and cashless bail. Rep. Tim Moore remarked, "Leftist, soft-on-crime judges and magistrates are allowing these career criminals to escape justice."

Suspect Decarlos Brown Jr. is shown on camera reportedly slashing Zarutska in the throat many times before he casually leaves the scene while blood drips from his knife. After being taken into custody, Brown was accused of first-degree murder.

North Carolina is incensed at Governor Josh Stein's response to Iryna Zarutska's stabbing death on August 22. Others have accused the Democrat of political deflection. Stein claimed he was "appalled" by the video footage of Zarutska's murder in a post on X, and he intensified his efforts to recruit additional cops. "To keep people secure, we need additional police officers on the beat. For this reason, my budget includes more funds to employ more police officers with the necessary training," Stein stated

Surveillance footage shows Brown pacing before suddenly attacking her with a pocketknife. Shortly after, she passed out as Brown, blood streaming from his weapon, moved into the train car. The main focus of the criticism now is on Brown's lengthy criminal history. According to the New York Post, Brown was released from jail in 2020 and has more than a dozen charges from 2014, including armed robbery. He has been detained and freed about 14 times since. Numerous Republicans contend that this case exposes structural flaws in the Democratic-led legal system in North Carolina.

Sen. Tom Cotton charged Stein with failing to address the underlying issue. Cotton commented on X that if Governor Stein truly cared, he would call for the cancellation of Roy Cooper's "Task Force for Racial Equity," which left Zarutska's killer on the loose. James Uthmeier, the attorney general of Florida, also cited Stein's time as attorney general, during which he backed legislation that detractors said lowered the bar for prosecution.

"In 2020, my Democrat opponent, Roy Cooper, tasked a group of extreme leftists with advising him on implementing his executive order, which introduced weak-on-crime policies," said Michael Whatley, a former RNC chairman and current Senate candidate, in reference to Brown's release.

In a Truth Social post, President Donald Trump also denounced the incident and accused Democrats of being responsible for Zarutska's passing. "The offender was a well-known professional criminal... previously detained and freed on cashless bail 14 times in January," Trump stated. "Democrats, including Roy Cooper, the former disgraced governor and "wannabe senator," who refuse to imprison evildoers, bear the responsibility for Zarutska's death."
