On Tuesday, President Trump gave sanctuary jurisdictions a clear deadline: the funds cease on February 1.
Speaking in Detroit, Trump threatened to withhold federal funding from states and towns that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. This could deprive Democratic strongholds that have based their policies on protecting illegal aliens from deportation of billions of dollars.
Trump declared, "As of February 1, we're not making any payments to sanctuary cities or states having sanctuary cities," charging that these governments put criminals before people of the United States. The threat focuses on jurisdictions that defy the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer requests, a procedure that frequently leads to the release of illegal aliens, especially those accused of violent crimes, from local jails rather than their transfer to federal custody.
Advocates of sanctuary contend that the laws encourage migrants to cooperate with law enforcement or report crimes. Detractors argue that the regulations have created safe havens for repeat offenders in cities and compelled taxpayers nationwide to bear the financial burden.

It is unclear whether funding sources like Medicaid, food assistance, or other state-administered benefits would be spared because Trump did not outline which federal programs would be eliminated. This uncertainty virtually ensures legal lawsuits from Democratic mayors and attorneys general.

However, the administration has already indicated that it is prepared to carry out its commitment. The Department of Health and Human Services halted social services funding to five states earlier this month due to fraud concerns related to child care and welfare programs, and Attorney General Pam Bondi moved last February to limit federal law enforcement resources going to sanctuary jurisdictions.
Courts have already resisted. Last November, after FEMA connected the $34 million in anti-terrorism awards to the city's sanctuary laws, a federal judge in New York prevented the agency from taking the money away from the city's transit authority.
