Democrats Make Feeble Desperate Attempt to Defund ICE

In response to the Jan. 7 shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent, Rep. Ilhan Omar and over 100 House Democrats are attempting to defund the federal agencies tasked with executing immigration law. In a broad statement that views immigration enforcement as illegitimate rather than necessary, Omar charged Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection with acting "with impunity" and said that ICE had "no place" in American communities during a press conference on Tuesday.
Rep. Delia Ramirez of Illinois intensified the vitriol by referring to ICE officials as "criminals in masks," asking for prosecutions, and even suggesting that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem be impeached. Democrats merely provided talking points and outrage when asked how the federal government would handle criminal illegal aliens if ICE were to lose funding.
Rep. Chuy García, who is retiring from Illinois, made an effort to reconcile his complaints about agent behavior, profiling, masks, and the use of force while admitting that the law permits the removal of criminals. The apparent question that remained unaddressed is that removals cannot take place unless an agency is authorized and financially supported to do so. Enforcement mechanics are not replaced by complaints about methods.
As a deadline for January draws near, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has been reluctant to comment on whether Democrats will truly block funds for immigration enforcement. However, he has criticized President Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes $75 billion for ICE and was overwhelmingly opposed by Democrats before Trump signed it into law in July of last year.

The push within the party is already raising alarms. In a report, the center-left research group Third Way urged Democrats to abandon the rhetoric of "abolishing ICE," arguing that it is politically poisonous and gives Republicans a distinct edge in matters of border security and public safety. Dan Turrentine, a seasoned Democratic strategist, was more direct, referring to the defund push as "political insanity."

If you take away the buzzwords, the drama remains the same: Democrats try to cut off funding for immigration enforcement but are unable to explain how the law is implemented in its absence. Omar's demand is just an effort to defund the system that is finally working, as enforcement has been restored and the border is stable.
