Why Are “Peaceful” Minneapolis Protesters Using Militia-Like Tactics to Track Law Enforcement?

After learning that activists in Minneapolis were tracking federal law enforcement cars in real time using encrypted Signal chats, the FBI opened a formal investigation. Investigators believe that this coordination effort may have transcended from protest to criminal obstruction.

This Monday, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the investigation, stating that the government acted swiftly after it was discovered that activists were using Signal to exchange private information about the actions of federal agencies. Patel asserts that the messages appeared deliberate, intentional, and potentially even on a national scale.

In an interview with Benny Johnson, Patel stated, "I started an investigation as soon as [Cam] Higby posted that." He likened the reaction to how the FBI responds to any reliable information involving threats or interference with law enforcement. "We're going to arrest people if it leads to a violation of federal law," Patel declared. "You can't set up a situation where law enforcement is in danger."

Patel underlined that the bureau is taking constitutional protections into consideration while maintaining a strict stance against illegal activity. He declared, "We will not tolerate violence, escalation, or violations of the federal code, but we constantly balance the First Amendment." He continued by saying that Minneapolis has consistently crossed that boundary.

Republicans claim that the Signal network is a component of a larger activist infrastructure that aims to thwart government investigations into widespread welfare fraud and immigration enforcement. GOP officials claim that activists watch agents, incite conflicts and incidents, and then use coordinated media pressure to place the blame on federal authorities using encrypted communications.

The Democratic leadership in Minnesota is currently coming under increasing pressure. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Governor Tim Walz have all frequently criticized federal immigration enforcement, accusing them of inciting unrest by comparing ICE agents to Nazis or the Gestapo. Republicans contend that this rhetoric has given activists the confidence to obstruct legitimate operations.

Sen. Ron Johnson linked the rioting to ongoing federal investigations into years of alleged welfare fraud involving taxpayer monies, saying on Monday that Minnesota Democrats are encouraging violence and obstructing federal law enforcement.

Senior state officials might be subject to severe legal repercussions if they are shown to have assisted in planning or facilitating activist meddling, according to former Justice Department official Chad Mizelle. Flanagan may soon hear from federal investigators, according to Mizelle, who stated, "If you're involved in a conspiracy interfering with ICE operations and someone dies as part of that conspiracy, all participants can be charged."

Representative Brandon Gill described the pattern as calculated. Gill cited sanctuary policies that hinder local collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement as evidence that "Democrats put federal officers in impossible situations and then weaponize the chaos for political gain." He said that supportive media personalities and Democratic politicians were inciting activists and then taking advantage of the ensuing uproar to completely halt enforcement.

According to Patel, the FBI is now actively tracking the Signal trail wherever it goes. Patel stressed that arrests, not warnings, would be the next course of action if such conversations went beyond activism into obstruction or endangered federal officers.
