What Were Vladimir Putin’s Thoughts After President Trump’s B-2 Stealth Bomber Flyover Greeting?

On Friday, President Donald Trump greeted Russian President Vladimir Putin to Alaska with a show of American air might. A B-2 stealth bomber and four F-35 fighter planes flew over the state. The two leaders were welcomed as they got to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson for a very important meeting.

As Trump and Putin walked down a red carpet, four F-35s and a B-2 bomber flew over them. The F-35s came from Eielson Air Force Base, while the F-22s are based at Elmendorf.

Officials say that two B-2 bombers were stationed at the base before the meeting. The same sort of plane was also utilized in Operation Midnight Hammer in June to attack Iran's nuclear sites.

Trump has called the B-2 "an amazing machine" many times and said earlier this year that "new and improved" variants would be coming out. The bomber can carry both regular and nuclear missiles and fly across the world without needing to refuel.

President Donald Trump set the tone for Friday's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin by meeting him on the tarmac at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, where American aviation power was on full display. When the two leaders got off their planes, they walked down a red carpet that was lined with F-22 fighter airplanes on either side. A B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and four F-35 Lightning II planes flew by in a precise formation above.

Two U.S. officials said that two B-2 bombers had flown into the facility before the meeting and that the F-35s had come from Eielson Air Force facility, which is not far away. The F-22s are part of Elmendorf's own fleet. It wasn't obvious right away if Trump personally requested the flyover as a show of power before his talks with Putin, but the choice of planes was interesting.

The B-2 bomber, which represents the U.S.'s ability to reach around the world and use nuclear weapons, was the same type used in Operation Midnight Hammer in June. Seven B-2s flew straight for 36 hours from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri to Iran for that operation. They dropped more than a dozen bunker-buster bombs on suspected nuclear installations. Trump later declared such places were "obliterated," but U.S. military officials acknowledged they were still working on comprehensive damage assessments.

Trump has praised the planes and their pilots at every chance he gets in the past few weeks. At one point, he held out a tiny model for reporters and called it "an amazing machine."

The reception in Anchorage was a stark visual background for the day's diplomatic agenda. It showed off the military might of the United States as the two nuclear powers got ready to meet in person. At one point during the B-2 Bomber flyover Putin was clearly focused on the display. One could only wonder what his thoughts may have been at such a clever and mighty display of American Military Might.
