Following the discovery of widespread fraud linked to federal benefit programs by investigators, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced on Friday that federal financial awards to the state and the city of Minneapolis would be immediately suspended in an effort to stop what she called Minnesota's "handouts to thieves." Rollins pointed out the well-known $250 million "Feeding Our Future" case and alleged misuse of Paycheck Protection Program loans and daycare reimbursements in a formal letter to Democratic Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, stating that the level and frequency of the fraud show that they can't manage federal funds properly without stricter oversight.

The action comes after Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mehmet Oz warned in early December that Minnesota authorities would be investigated for what he called a blatant neglect of duty and that they would lose federal funds if they did nothing.
Additionally, outside investigators have brought attention to purported networks of phony daycares and health-care organizations, allegations that state officials have dismissed as partisan smears after they were bolstered by independent investigation. Walz dismissed the accusations, calling one well-known opponent a "delusional conspiracy theorist" and a "far-right YouTuber."
