Following a bloody Labor Day weekend that left at least 54 people wounded and seven dead, President Trump chastised Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Tuesday, promising to "solve" the city's escalating crime problem.

Local media first stated on Monday that 53 individuals had been shot, five of whom had been killed; by dusk, ABC 7 had increased the number to 54 victims and seven fatalities. A drive-by shooting in the Bronzeville area on Saturday night left seven people injured, making it one of the bloodiest instances.  According to police records, the victims of that incident, who ranged in age from 28 to 32, were hit in the legs, thighs, feet, and buttocks.

Following this bloody Labor Day weekend that highlighted Chicago's escalating crime problem, President Donald Trump harshly slammed Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker. At least 54 gunshot victims and seven fatalities were reported by ABC 7 Chicago by Monday night.

The most well-known incident happened in Bronzeville on Saturday night when a car went up to a gathering of people who were gathered outside and started firing. Seven individuals were hurt in the drive-by, according to police, including a 30-year-old woman who was hurt in the knee and a 28-year-old woman who was shot in the thigh. Additionally, a number of guys in their late 20s and early 30s were shot and had injuries to their feet, buttocks, and legs.

In response to the violence, President Trump stepped up his criticism of Chicago's Democratic leadership by promising to "solve" the city's crime problem, just as he had done in Washington, D.C. Trump has frequently used Chicago as an illustration of poor municipal management, charging Pritzker and Johnson with overseeing laws that give criminals more confidence while putting citizens at risk.

Trump has positioned his administration as a counterpoint to what he refers to as "soft-on-crime" Democrat policies, and Chicago's violence has been a recurrent hot spot in national discussions on public safety, bail reform, and policing. The growing number of victims is expected to bolster Trump's rhetoric of law and order and increase pressure on Pritzker and Johnson's leadership as municipal investigations into the killings over the weekend continue.
