On August 27, 2026, Nathan Vilas Laatsch, a 29-year-old former IT specialist for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), pleaded guilty to attempting to transmit highly classified national defense information to a foreign government.

A Flawed Espionage Plot
Laatsch’s plan quickly unraveled. In March 2025, the FBI discovered his initial offer to provide classified information to a "friendly foreign government." Soon after, Laatsch found himself communicating not with foreign operatives, but with an undercover FBI agent.
Believing he was dealing with foreign officials, Laatsch left his thumb drive at a public park in northern Virginia for them to retrieve. The drive contained multiple typed documents rated up to the Top Secret level. Laatsch even included a message bragging about his access, calling the leak "a decent sample size" meant to "decently demonstrate the range of types of products" he could provide.
Selling Secrets for Citizenship
What drives a person to betray their country? For Laatsch, the primary motivation appeared to be a desire for a new passport.
According to the Department of Justice, Laatsch explicitly told the undercover agent he wanted "citizenship" in the foreign country. While he noted he didn't strictly need "material compensation" from a financial standpoint, he was effectively bartering American security for foreign allegiance. FBI Assistant Director Roman Rozhavsky summarized the betrayal sharply, noting Laatsch was "offering to sell American secrets to buy foreign citizenship."
Officials also hinted at ideological motives. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Theophani K. Stamos emphasized that "political disagreement is not a justification for jeopardizing the security of the United States and the lives of those who protect it."

The Consequences of Betrayal
The FBI sting concluded on May 29, 2025, when Laatsch arrived at a prearranged location in northern Virginia to hand over more classified documents and was promptly arrested.
Now facing a maximum penalty of life in prison, Laatsch is scheduled to be sentenced on January 27, 2027. His case serves as a stark warning to anyone holding a security clearance. As Attorney General Todd Blanche stated, the government will find and hold accountable anyone who unlawfully discloses national defense information "to the fullest extent the law allows."
