An executive order designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization was signed by President Donald Trump on Monday, instructing government agencies to dismantle its networks within the United States. Less than two weeks have passed since Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was assassinated, and the action follows growing cries for accountability.
According to the executive order, Antifa is a "militarist, anarchist enterprise" that incites riots and attacks on law enforcement, intimidates political figures, and works to subvert federal law. The injunction follows evidence linking Charlie Kirk's assassination on September 10 to Antifa ideology. According to Utah prosecutors, Tyler Robinson, 22, the alleged shooter, admitted to the murder after leaving ammo bearing Antifa slogans.

Citing previous riots, attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, doxxing of public people, and concerted disruption of federal law enforcement, the executive order portrays Antifa as a coordinated campaign of violence rather than a loose network. The administration's strategy involves going after people and groups accused of funding violent crimes, in addition to those directly engaged in them.
The decision has already sparked an international reaction. Citing Trump's leadership, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán declared Friday that his government will do the same. Orbán cited a 2023 incident in Budapest where activists with ties to Antifa allegedly attacked people attending a mourning service. Parliamentarians in the Netherlands made a similar move, and a French Antifa group in Lyon is currently facing a ban. In the aftermath of Kirk's murder, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni similarly denounced Antifa rhetoric, describing political violence in Europe as "unacceptable, dangerous, irresponsible, and antithetical to any embryo of democracy."
Trump is fulfilling his promise to take on what he has long characterized as an extremist movement in the United States by designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization.
