President Trump Adds Militarized Border Zone in California

To boost border security efforts, the Trump administration is establishing a second militarized zone along the southern U.S. border, this time in California.
To strengthen "the historic role public lands have played in safeguarding national sovereignty," the Department of the Interior announced on Wednesday that it will give the Navy jurisdiction over the majority of California's international border with Mexico.
The recently declared military area crosses the Imperial Valley and border towns like Tecate, and it stretches almost all the way from the Arizona state line to the Otay Mountain Wilderness.
To enable U.S. forces to detain immigrants and others who are suspected of trespassing on Army, Air Force, or Navy bases, as well as to authorize extra criminal charges that carry a potential jail sentence, extensive portions of the border have been designated as militarized zones since April. Along with various helicopters, drones, and surveillance tools, more than 7,000 soldiers have been sent to the border.
The military tactic was first used in April along a 170-mile (275-kilometer) section of the border in New Mexico. Later, it was extended to parts of the border in Texas and Arizona.
The newest national defense region in California is a high-traffic location for illegal immigration crossings, according to the Interior Department. However, this year, the number of Border Patrol arrests along the southern U.S. border has decreased to the lowest level since the 1960s due to President Donald Trump's desire for mass deportations.

In a news release, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated, "We are strengthening national defense, protecting our public lands from unlawful use, and advancing the President's agenda by working with the Navy to close long-standing security gaps."
President Trump's Declaration of Emergency has put the military in the forefront of preventing migrants from entering the country through ports of entry. According to legal experts, the policy pushes the military into a potentially political mission and violates a limitation on military law enforcement on American soil.

As a federal judge ruled Wednesday that the Trump administration must cease the deployment of the California National Guard in Los Angeles and return command of those troops to the state, the new militarized zone was declared. The recent decision opposing the Trump administration's use of the National Guard in Los Angeles coincides with other legal challenges to his army deployment to liberal towns like Portland and Chicago.
