A Change.org petition with over two million signatures calls for mercy for Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old Indian illegal alien truck driver accused of murdering three people in a Florida Turnpike collision. After doing an unlawful U-turn in his tractor trailer on August 12, Singh may spend up to 45 years in jail. Singh was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals in California after the collision and then extradited back to stand trial on three charges of vehicular murder.
As of Sunday morning, 2.2 million people have signed the petition, which urges Governor Ron DeSantis to reduce Singh's possible sentence and maintains that the occurrence was a "tragic accident — not a deliberate act." He faces three charges of vehicular murder from Florida authorities, each of which carries a 15-year sentence. He was refused bail, and DHS has called him a "significant threat to public safety."
With over 2.2 million signatures, an online petition in favor of Harjinder Singh, the illegal alien truck driver suspected of causing a fatal Florida Turnpike collision, has attracted international attention. Investigators reported that Singh, 28, killed three individuals on August 12 when he made an unlawful U-turn with his tractor trailer. Singh is charged with three counts of vehicular murder. He faces a 45-year jail sentence if found guilty.
Under the banner "Collective Punjabi youth," the Change.org petition has amassed signatures from people all around the world. Singh should be given more leeway, according to the appeal, as "this was a tragic accident — not a deliberate act." Although responsibility is important, the seriousness of the accusations against him is out of proportion to the events that transpired. In their comments, supporters reinforced that message. One Sydney-based supporter said, "He made a terrible mistake, not a deliberate choice to harm anyone." A possible 45-year sentence was deemed "unfair for a young boy who left his home country to have a bright future, support family" by another Canadian user.
There have been diplomatic repercussions from the aftermath. In response to the accident, Senator Marco Rubio of Florida said that foreigners were "endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers" and froze commercial truck driver visas. Punjabis are being unjustly singled out, according to Indian legislator Harsimrat Kaur Badal, who who faced backlash for defending Singh, "Punjabi and Sikh drivers make up 20% of the United States’ trucking industry."
DHS labeled Singh "a significant threat to public safety" after the deadly collision and took action to put him in jail. He was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in California, brought back to Florida, and are now awaiting trial, which may result in decades behind bars. Should Harjinder Singh be Sentenced to Only Counseling or Community Service after irresponsibly causing the deaths of three people whose names have not been released to the public yet while this petition is ongoing?
