DOJ Investigation of Andrew Cuomo for Allegedly Lying to Congress in COVID-Related Nursing Home Deaths

According to reports, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is the subject of a criminal investigation by the Department of Justice for allegedly lying to Congress about his involvement in downplaying nursing facility deaths linked to COVID.

According to the New York Times on Tuesday, the probe centers on whether Cuomo deceived Congress in an interview he gave on June 11, 2024, when he denied looking over or introducing changes to a mortality record for a nursing facility from July 2020.

According to reports, Cuomo did, in fact, contribute to the creation of the report, which undercounted deaths by as much as 46%, according to evidence examined by House Republicans that included handwritten adjustments and internal emails.

The advocacy organization Voices for Seniors referred to the investigation as "justified" and "overdue," while Cuomo's team denounced it as "lawfare and election interference."

According to the New York Times, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is the subject of a criminal investigation by the Justice Department for allegedly lying to Congress about how the state handled nursing facility mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jeanine Pirro, a longtime public critic of Cuomo's pandemic policies, is currently in charge of the investigation, which is being directed by the U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington, D.C., and apparently started around a month ago.

Cuomo's testimony before the House COVID subcommittee on June 11, 2024, in which he denied any involvement in the creation, evaluation, or editing of the state's July 2020 nursing facility report, is under question. The number of COVID-related deaths in long-term care facilities was greatly understated in that report, which listed 6,432 deaths rather than the almost 9,000 that occurred when hospital deaths were taken into account.

Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said there is "overwhelming evidence" that the former governor deceived lawmakers and recommended Cuomo to the DOJ for prosecution. The panel reportedly got documents that include internal emails between Cuomo aides and copies of the report with Cuomo's handwritten revisions. This includes one margin note that questions the claimed death toll and another note that uses gentler phrasing instead of the word "death." "death."

Cuomo, who is currently a front-runner in the mayoral election in New York City, has condemned the inquiry. Rich Azzopardi, his spokesperson, told the New York Post that they were not aware of any investigation and described the claim as "plain and simple lawfare and election interference." In an interview with the Honestly with Bari Weiss podcast on Tuesday, Cuomo also defended his record, claiming that "everything New York State did followed federal guidance" and attributing the criticism to "conservative rhetoric" and political pressure.

Cuomo's campaign ad praising his pandemic leadership was released the day before the inquiry. Meanwhile, the news was quickly picked up by opponents in the mayoral contest. Comptroller Brad Lander cautioned against electing "a compromised mayor kissing Trump's ass," while Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani stated that Cuomo's "career has been defined by corruption and deceit." "We cannot exchange one compromised mayor for another," stated State Senator Zellnor Myrie.

The existence of the investigation has not been publicly acknowledged or denied by the DOJ.
