Democrat Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Facing Criminal Charges for Stolen FEMA Funds

The fallout from a federal indictment and a comprehensive House Ethics Committee investigation that uncovered what investigators describe as a protracted pattern of financial misconduct connected to disaster relief funds is intensifying as Republican Representative Greg Steube of Florida is attempting to force a House vote to expel Democrat Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.
When legislators return to Washington, Steube says he would put up a motion to remove Cherfilus-McCormick, citing recently published ethics reports that include over two dozen major infractions. After her indictment, the Florida Republican initially proposed an expulsion resolution in November, promising to reexamine the effort if further information became available. Steube claims that the evidence has gone beyond that point, as the Ethics Committee's findings are now available to the public.
Last Monday, the House Ethics Committee released a report outlining 27 charges against Cherfilus-McCormick. According to that study, there is proof that Cherfilus-McCormick's public health firm, Trinity Health Care Services, received around $5.8 million in overpayments from the state of Florida and contributed millions to her congressional campaign in 2022.
"Today's House Ethics findings detail more than two dozen counts of serious financial crimes," Steube wrote on X, adding, "I'll call up a resolution to expel her from Congress when we return to Washington."

Cherfilus-McCormick faced charges late last year for conspiring with her brother to embezzle approximately $5 million in 2021 FEMA disaster funds. The prosecution claims that Cherfilus-McCormick laundered the money, transferred it through several accounts, and then used it to finance her personal lifestyle and congressional campaign.
Prosecutors claim that Cherfilus-McCormick paid $109,000 for a six-figure yellow diamond ring, which investigators have mentioned among other transactions. Since then, that ring has become one of the most noticeable representations of the case and the attention currently focusing on the Democrat from South Florida.

After the indictment was made public, Cherfilus-McCormick surreptitiously altered a Christmas photo that was uploaded to X, digitally removing the large yellow diamond from her palm, as MxM News first revealed. A side-by-side comparison with her official House image revealed identical hand placement, the same stance, and a noticeable missing stone. The ring's abrupt disappearance garnered a lot of attention online and supported the prosecution's assertions that FEMA monies that had been taken were not only misappropriated but also flaunted until the consequences were too great to ignore.
A two-thirds majority vote is needed to remove a sitting member of Congress, a requirement saved for the most grave betrayals of confidence. Given the nature of the accusations, Steube has presented the endeavor as inevitable, contending that taking disaster funding, especially in a state like Florida that is prone to hurricanes, undermines public trust in the government.
