On Friday, a member of the D.C. National Guard stepped in to stop an attack on a Park Police officer at the National Mall. Staff Sgt. Hector Amaya, a native of the city, responded instinctively, stating, "I wouldn't just stand by" when the situation escalated in the capital.

In a statement, the National Guard said that Amaya, a member of the 113th Squadron's security troops, noticed a Park Police officer being attacked as he was directing traffic.

Amaya pursued the suspect and apprehended him. "The Park Police officer asked for our help, and I was the first one to catch up and stop him..." He told reporters, "I would have done that for anyone."

Amaya, who has lived in D.C. his whole life, stated that his connections to the city made him act: "I care a lot about this city." We want people to know that we're people, we're their neighbors, we're their friends, and we're just here to help.”

On Friday, the National Guard reported that Staff Sgt. Hector Amaya, who is part of the 113th Squadron, stopped an attack on a Park Police officer at the National Mall. Amaya was on duty when he spotted the cop directing traffic and getting attacked.

Amaya stated in a statement, "The Park Police officer asked for our help, and I was the first to catch up and was able to hold him until the park police arrived and turned him over." He simply stated, "That's why we're here," to clarify his reasoning. I wouldn't just stand by and watch someone get hurt.

Amaya stressed how important it was to him to keep the city safe. "I was born and raised in the DMV and have lived there my whole life. He stated, "I remember coming here for field trips when I was in fifth grade, and I'm still coming here in my 20s, so I care a lot about this city."

The Guard used the incident to show how helpful it is in Washington, fighting back against people who have questioned its presence. But for Amaya, the occasion was much more than how it looked. His prompt response showed how Guardsmen are part of the community and ready to help the police when needed.

The intervention comes at a time when crime is getting worse in Washington. President Trump has talked a lot about the city's rising violence. For example, he said that car thefts have doubled in the last five years, carjackings have tripled, and homicides have reached their highest levels in decades. "Our capital city has been taken over by violent gangs, bloodthirsty criminals, roaming mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs, and homeless people. We're not going to let it happen anymore," Trump stated earlier this year.
