Chicago Cops Ordered to Stand Down in the Face of Violent Attacks Against ICE Agents

As federal Border Patrol agents begged for assistance while being mobbed and assaulted by anti-ICE demonstrators on the city's South Side on Saturday, Chicago police officers were reportedly told to "stand down."
According to the Department of Homeland Security, federal officers were on patrol on Saturday when they were ambushed and struck by automobiles before being encircled by ten vehicles. After disobeying warnings, a lady carrying a semi-automatic rifle allegedly attempted to run down officers and was shot. One attacker allegedly attempted to run the agents over after at least ten vehicles boxed them in and repeatedly rammed them, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
When a male voice stated, "Per the chief of patrol: clear everybody out, we're not responding over there," the dispatcher canceled police backup, according to dispatch recordings released by ExxAlerts. "NO UNITS WILL RESPOND," said an internal memo that Fox News was able to receive, confirming the directive. The caller is one of about thirty ICE (armed patrol) agents that are in the area.
In a subsequent statement, Chicago police denied the order, asserting that officers "did in fact respond" to ensure traffic management and safety. Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, described the attack as "an attack on brave law enforcement" and promised to send more troops to the city. Federal agents came under siege on Saturday when a group of ICE demonstrators, many of whom were armed, surrounded them and blocked their escape routes with their cars.
ExxAlerts dispatch audio seems to show a spectacular collapse in response as the attack progressed. One dispatcher stated, "They ran the federal agent off the road when the offending vehicle crashed," before being told to hold units back. "Per the chief of patrol: clear everybody out; we're not responding over there," a male voice said a few seconds later. Responding officers who were already on their way said they were "blocked in" but would try to get out.
The command was validated by an internal CPD message that Fox News was able to get, which mentioned "approximately 30 armed patrol agents (ICE) who are being surrounded by a large crowd." The department said in public that its officers "did in fact respond" and were there to "maintain public safety" in spite of this.
"Today in Chicago, members of our brave law enforcement were attacked—rammed and boxed in by ten vehicles, including an attacker with a semi-automatic weapon," said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in a statement posted on X, denouncing the mob violence. She warned that the attacks represented an increase in anti-ICE aggressiveness and described Chicago as "crime-ravaged," vowing to send more federal assistance to the city.
The altercation occurred during ICE's ongoing "Operation Midway Blitz," a campaign aimed at criminal illegal aliens who have exploited Illinois' sanctuary laws.
Vehicle attacks on federal officials have been more common among protestors in the Chicago region, including two earlier this week, DHS said. Since Friday, over a dozen protesters have been taken into custody close to the Broadview ICE facility. The ambush on Saturday did not result in any injuries to federal officers.
