California’s “Project Train to Nowhere” Derailed as President Trump Cuts $4 Billion in Federal Funding

California's long-delayed high-speed rail project will no longer get $4 billion in government funds, President Trump stated Wednesday. Trump referred to it as a "disastrously overpriced" failure, claiming that the state's Democratic government had wasted public funds and provided no benefits.
"I have officially freed you from funding California's disastrously overpriced 'HIGH SPEED TRAIN TO NOWHERE,'" Trump said in a Truth Social post. Shortly after Trump took office, the Federal Railroad Administration confirmed the funding suspension. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy cited 16 years of failure, zero high-speed tracks finished, and skyrocketing prices as reasons.
On Wednesday, President Trump announced on Truth Social that $4 billion in federal financing associated with California's high-speed rail project had been suspended by his administration. In a lengthy statement, Trump stated that his administration took this action to protect taxpayers from a project that, despite exorbitant expenditures and numerous delays, has failed to yield any benefits.
In his response to X, California Governor Gavin Newsom said that Trump had "abandoned the Central Valley" and promised to oppose what his office refers to as an "illegal action."
Trump tweeted, "I am happy to announce that I have officially released you from funding California's disastrously overpriced 'HIGH SPEED TRAIN TO NOWHERE.'"
He addressed the law-abiding, tax-paying, hardworking citizens of the United States of America.
"Led by the incompetent Governor of California, Gavin Newscum," the president criticized the project, accusing the state of squandering "hundreds of billions of dollars" with "NOTHING in return except Cost Overruns." Trump congratulated Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy for making sure that "not a SINGLE penny in Federal Dollars will go towards this Newscum SCAM ever again" and said that the promised rail line "still does not exist, and never will."
Secretary Duffy confirmed the funding stoppage shortly after Trump's declaration, citing a 300-page Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) compliance report that detailed numerous delays, contract violations, and unmet commitments. "The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) has demonstrated that it is unable to construct its train to nowhere on schedule or within budget," according to Duffy.
The FRA's analysis shows that, despite work starting more than ten years ago, no high-speed rail infrastructure has been completed. Although it is still years away from completion and has not received at least $7 billion in funding, the original 800-mile rail system design has since been reduced to 171 miles between Merced and Bakersfield.
Governor Gavin Newsom responded by saying that "Trump wants to hand China the future and abandon the Central Valley," accusing the administration of undermining the country's only high-speed rail project.
Additionally, Newsom's administration declared the cessation of federal funds to be "illegal" and promised to contest it in court. "The rail line is currently in the track-laying phase," Newsom stated. "California is taking every possible approach to combat this unlawful activity."
Trump has promised taxpayers that Washington will not provide any more funds for this "ill-conceived and unnecessary project," despite the vehement reaction from California leaders.
