California Gov. Newsom Signs New Law Designed to Intimidate ICE Officers
By The Blog Source
A new ordinance passed by Governor Gavin Newsom forbids the majority of law enforcement personnel from donning masks; this move is obviously directed at ICE. Retorting that Newsom had "no jurisdiction" over federal officers, Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli came back. The action demonstrates Newsom's duplicity, as he previously ordered Californians to wear masks during COVID but now forbids officers from doing so for their safety.
The far-left State Senator Scott Wiener, who is most known for promoting California's extreme "sanctuary" policies, wrote SB 627, which Newsom signed into law on Saturday. By increasing their susceptibility to harassment and reprisal from the left, the law aims to intimidate ICE officers. The bill has "no effect" on ICE activities, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Essayli, who also criticized Newsom for not outlawing masks for criminals.
Sacramento's most recent stunt is merely political theater meant to please the activist Left. Scott Wiener, the author of the law, has dedicated his professional life to promoting radical ideologies, from opposing federal immigration enforcement to supporting taxpayer-funded transgender procedures for juveniles. Democrats in California are now using state authority as a weapon against the very law enforcement officials who are supposed to enforce immigration laws, and they have Newsom's support for this.
The measure, according to Newsom's administration, would shield Californians from the "secret police" that President Trump and his advisor Stephen Miller are allegedly using. However, the rhetoric is not grounded in reality. The Supremacy Clause of the Constitution declares unequivocally that states have no power over federal officers. Without holding back, Essayli declared that the law will have "no effect" on ICE and urged Newsom to be as brave in his dealings with criminals. This challenge exposed the fundamental issue: California Democrats prioritize protecting illegal immigrants and undermining law enforcement over combating crime.
The level of hypocrisy is astounding. Newsom implemented some of the most stringent mask and vaccine laws in the country only a few years ago. Long after research proved it was unnecessary, he ordered Orange County beaches to close, closed businesses, and made kids wear masks in class. However, Newsom was spotted dining at the upscale French Laundry without a mask, while Californians faced closures and fines. His regulations were never about safety but rather about control. He is now denying law enforcement officials a fundamental form of protection while criminals are still allowed to conceal their faces, exhibiting the same double standard.
Public safety is not the issue here. It has to do with politics. Newsom and Wiener seek to expose ICE officers to threats, harassment, and intimidation from extreme activist organizations. Instead of addressing California's very real problems—increasing crime, widespread homelessness, exorbitant taxes, and a major flight of working people and businesses—they want to make headlines by "resisting Trump."
Newsom's restriction won't ultimately prevent ICE from carrying out its duties. The Constitution is on the side of federal officers, who will continue to enforce the law. However, it makes it quite evident what California Democrats' goals are: to reward criminals and illegal immigrants, to punish law enforcement, and to disregard the protection of their own people.
