AG Bondi Turns Up the Pressure on Jurisdictions Defying Federal Immigration Law

A list of 35 sanctuary jurisdictions that Attorney General Pam Bondi's DOJ claims put Americans in danger by refusing to work with ICE was made public. Bondi called on towns to renounce laws that shield criminal illegal immigrants and threatened more legal action.
For rules that hinder Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers, DOJ singles out 35 jurisdictions.
In order to eliminate sanctuary protections, Pam Bondi promises to take more legal action and work with Homeland Security. They identify and humiliate a number of Democratic-led states and localities, such as California, New York, and Washington, D.C. In a broad declaration that highlights the Trump administration's increased emphasis on implementing immigration policy through legal methods, Attorney General Pam Bondi is increasing the pressure on states, counties, and towns that violate federal immigration law by designating 35 of them as sanctuary cities.
In a statement released Tuesday morning, Bondi said, "The Department of Justice will continue to bring litigation against sanctuary jurisdictions and work closely with the Department of Homeland Security to eradicate these harmful policies throughout the country." The days of not cooperating with ICE are coming to an end, as her statements make apparent.
The DOJ's list included 14 states, including important blue states like California, New York, Illinois, and Colorado. It is noteworthy that Illinois' sanctuary policies are already the subject of a DOJ lawsuit. However, a federal judge recently dismissed the complaint, holding that the state is protected from federal overreach by its autonomy under the Tenth Amendment. Bondi's DOJ is anticipated to either appeal or revise its complaint in spite of the defeat, exhibiting tenacity reminiscent of President Trump's initial court battles.
The list has more meaning than that. In one prominent instance, the Democratic mayor of Louisville, Kentucky, changed city policies and granted ICE's 48-hour detainer requests after being threatened by the DOJ. In an appearance on Fox News Live, Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons commended the change, pointing out that sanctuary towns provide safe spaces for dangerous people to "roam our neighborhoods."
Left-wing authorities frequently contend that only the federal government should be in charge of immigration enforcement, but their refusal to jail criminal illegal aliens until ICE can do so defies that reasoning. Ignoring detainers has the practical consequence of reintroducing potentially violent people into society, endangering American civilians, including lawful immigrants.
Major liberal cities like Boston, New Orleans, Seattle, and Philadelphia are also on Bondi's list, along with four counties that have detainer-nullifying laws. Detainers are regular federal letters that ask local jails to hold people for up to 48 hours until ICE can conduct an arrest, according to the DOJ. This is by no means a harsh step.
A DOJ official stated, "This is an opportunity for these jurisdictions to join us at the table and help keep Americans safe." However, experience indicates that without legal leverage, collaboration is improbable. For this same reason, the DOJ under Trump is adopting a more assertive attitude, demonstrating that resistance will no longer be accepted without repercussions.
The message is unambiguous: The Trump administration is once again placing a high priority on accountability, border security, and law and order under Attorney General Pam Bondi. And the days of governors and mayors of sanctuary cities looking for leniency are past.
