Attorney General Pam Bondi has fired Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, from her position as a federal prosecutor. The removal comes amid growing criticism of previous DOJ probes and intensified calls for accountability inside the department.
Comey, who worked in the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, was recently fired, though no formal cause has been made public. She has previously prosecuted high-profile trials against Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and music tycoon Sean "Diddy" Combs.
Laura Loomer, an investigative journalist, highlighted that the firing happened about two months after she called on Bondi to remove Comey and her husband, Lucas Issacharoff, from their positions at the Department of Justice due to apparent anti-Trump prejudice.
Maurene Comey has been fired from her position as a federal prosecutor, according to various reports citing individuals familiar with the issue. The daughter of former FBI Director James Comey worked in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, where she worked on some of the Justice Department's most contentious and high-profile cases, including those involving convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell.
Comey also worked on the racketeering and sex trafficking case against rapper and producer Sean "Diddy" Combs. Despite her apparent role in these high-profile convictions, officials have not revealed the exact cause for her dismissal. A representative for the United States Attorney's Office in Manhattan declined to comment, and the Department of Justice has yet to publish a formal statement.
ABC News confirmed Comey's departure with their sources, bolstering Politico's earlier report, which cited two people familiar with the matter.
Journalist Laura Loomer, who has previously criticized the DOJ for retaining officials thought to be hostile to President Trump, highlighted on X that the firing came two months after she openly requested Attorney General Bondi to remove Comey and her husband, Lucas Issacharoff. "Maurene Comey's husband is Lucas Issacharoff," Loomer stated. "He works in the current Trump DOJ despite having a lengthy history of opposing Trump. He is the Assistant U.S. Attorney in SDNY, having joined the Civil Division in 2019. Loomer noted that, while there had been no confirmation of Issacharoff's work status, she believed "he should be" fired as well.
The move comes as the FBI allegedly launches an investigation into James Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan for their roles in the botched Trump-Russia probe. The timing of Maurene Comey's firing has raised concerns among those looking for signals of greater housecleaning at the Justice Department under Bondi's leadership.
