President Trump’s U.S. Coast Guard Operation Pacific Viper Reports Largest Drug Bust in its 200+ Year History

The United States Coast Guard offloaded 76,140 pounds of illegal drugs worth $473 million in Florida, the largest haul in its history. The record haul, a result of President Donald Trump's Operation Pacific Viper, demonstrates the administration's aggressive crackdown on foreign cartels.

The seizure contained 61,740 pounds of cocaine and 14,400 pounds of marijuana. Crews interrupted 19 smuggling operations in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean, apprehending 34 suspected traffickers. The drugs contain an estimated 23 million lethal doses of cocaine, enough to kill the entire population of Florida.

The historic offload is the largest in US Coast Guard history and demonstrates the federal government's intensifying response to transnational drug cartels. Operation Pacific Viper, the Trump administration's latest counter-narcotics initiative, seeks to intercept cartel shipments before they reach American soil. The Coast Guard District Seven commander, Rear Adm. Adam Chamie, issued a stark warning about the operation's success: "The potential 23 million lethal doses of cocaine seized … are enough to fatally overdose the entire population of the state of Florida."

The interdictions were not small-scale. Coast Guard crews, assisted by the Navy's USS Cole, three cutters, a helicopter squadron, tactical teams, and even a Royal Netherlands Navy ship, intercepted 11 high-speed "go-fast" vessels, seizing thousands of pounds of contraband in multiple sweeps. The largest hauls included 8,800 pounds of cocaine near the Galápagos Islands in June and 9,160 pounds near Socorro Island, Mexico, in July.

Homeland Security officials hailed the bust as a watershed moment in joint US defense operations, describing Operation Pacific Viper as a "historic partnership" that floods the Eastern Pacific with naval and Coast Guard forces. Officials emphasized that 80 percent of successful drug interdictions take place in international waters, and Trump's push to increase resources ensures cartels face overwhelming force far from the United States' borders.

Captain John McWhite of the Hamilton praised his crew for their relentless pursuit of traffickers, noting that they apprehended 34 suspected smugglers during the mission. Officials from the Justice Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration also emphasized that this operation is part of a larger Trump directive that calls for increased military involvement in combating cartels in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico.

While drug cartels have long used maritime routes to flood the United States with drugs, this operation marks a significant shift. Rather than relying solely on law enforcement interdictions near US shores, the Trump administration's strategy emphasizes overwhelming deterrence and global cooperation to cut off supply lines before they reach land.

For a country grappling with the scourge of drug overdoses, the record haul shows that the administration is willing to use any tool at its disposal to protect American communities.
