DOJ Charges Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) with Fraud for Funding Extremist Groups

On April 21, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a federal grand jury in Montgomery, Alabama, has indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) on 11 counts. The charges include wire fraud, false statements to a federally insured bank, and conspiracy to commit concealment money laundering.

The indictment alleges a deceptive scheme operating since the 1980s. According to the DOJ, the SPLC, while publicly denouncing violent extremist groups on its website, secretly funneled over $3 million in donor funds to individuals associated with some of these very groups between 2014 and 2023. These groups reportedly included:

  • Ku Klux Klan

  • Aryan Nations

  • National Socialist Party of America

FBI Director Kash Patel stated, “They lied to their donors, vowing to dismantle violent extremist groups, and actually turned around and paid the leaders of these very extremist groups.” He further alleged that the funds were used by these groups to facilitate the commission of state and federal crimes.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche remarked that "Using donor money to allegedly profit off Klansmen cannot go unchecked," accusing the SPLC of "manufacturing racism to justify its existence."

To conceal these payments, the SPLC reportedly used a network of fictitious entities and connected bank accounts. The Department of Justice intends to seek the forfeiture of financial gains from these alleged illegal activities.

DOJ Actions on Multiple Fronts

This indictment of a prominent nonprofit is just one of several recent actions by the Department of Justice. For instance, the DOJ recently took steps to strengthen the federal death penalty, seeking to carry out capital sentences for the first time since 2003.

In other unrelated cases, the Justice Department has announced charges against a U.S. soldier for allegedly using classified information to profit from prediction market bets and has also rescheduled certain marijuana products to Schedule III, a move intended to facilitate medical research.

The complex details and potential impact of the SPLC indictment highlight the DOJ's ongoing work on diverse legal fronts. For continued updates, the public can visit the Department's official website.
