DONALD TRUMP NOMINATES CHRISTOPHER WRAY AS F.B.I DIRECTOR
President Donald Trump announced earlier today that he would nominate Christopher Asher Wray as his candidate for the vacant F.B.I leadership position. Christopher Wray is a former director of the criminal division at the Department of Justice. President Trump made the announcement on Twitter and he described Christopher Wray as ‘a man of impeccable credentials’. The President tweeted,
Christopher’s Wray’s appointment is still subject to a confirmation by the senate. In a statement, the 50-year-old described his selection as a “great honor” and said “I look forward to serving the American people with integrity as the leader of what I know firsthand to be an extraordinary group of men and women who have dedicated their careers to protecting this country.”
President Trump said Christopher Wray would “again serve his country as a fierce guardian of the law and model of integrity once the senate confirms him to lead the FBI.”
Uncertainty still surrounds the timing of his confirmation by the senate. Chairman of the Senate’s Judiciary committee Sen. Charles E. Grassley said the committee would only begin considering Wray’s nomination when it is submitted formally. It would be recalled that Wray headed the task force that won convictions against a Texas-based energy firm whose chief executive was President George W. Bush’s biggest contributor.
Christopher Wray’s predecessor as head of the criminal division Michael Chertoff said “It’s a very good pick. He has experience, knowledge and integrity.”
The F.B.I has come under intense scrutiny over the past few weeks following allegations of Russian involvement in last year’s presidential election. This led to the sack of former director James Comey who is expected to testify before a senate committee tomorrow.
